Hello Brothers and Sisters, my name is Rob Tebbens and I am running for the position of President of Local 2.
I am running for Local 2 President because I believe we need to restore the trust and confidence in our union’s leadership and to unite our membership behind Local 2’s core responsibility of defending our collective bargaining and fundamental rights.
A violation against any one of us is a violation against us all!
I also believe that our leadership must possess the necessary courage, knowledge, and experience to proactively defend our rights and advocate for our challenging issues.
For over 100-years Local 2 has developed a reputation of being a formidable force, capable and competent in its core mission of defending its members. But sadly, over the past three years this reputation has faded as we witnessed a frustrated, reactionary executive board allow the City to exert their will upon us with impunity.
As a fourth generation Chicago firefighter with a deep appreciation and respect for what our Union has accomplished, it was incredibly painful to witness our helplessness as the City forcibly enacted a policy that denied our collective bargaining and due process rights.
This level of contempt for our collective bargaining rights is something our membership hasn’t witnessed from a Chicago mayor since we first earned these rights in 1980.
As we celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the Strike, we must never forget the leadership, unity, and courage it took to successfully earn our collective bargaining rights. And if we hope to maintain these rights for generations to come, we must stand in solidarity as threats present themselves.
However, despite our recent setbacks, there is hope on the horizon. The City’s abuse of power and the current executive board’s inability to keep it in check has only fueled outrage from our membership, especially from within our younger ranks.
We recently witnessed proof of this when we elected two Tier 2 members to our Pension Board, Trustee Zach Pentek and Trustee Mike Flisk. I’d like to congratulate them on their victories and wish them well. These members, and others of their generation, are the future of Local 2. I am proud to see their enthusiasm in becoming leaders of our great Union and it gives me great hope that our pride and tradition will live on for generations to come.
Please join me in the fight to protect our membership, Vote for Rob Tebbens for Local 2 President.
